If your teeth are discoloured, chipped, broken, misaligned, irregularly shaped or have gaps between them, porcelain veneers can dramatically improve your smile and boost your confidence. Veneers are made of thin, tooth-coloured materials that are customized to fit your overall facial esthetic. When bonded to teeth, veneers can change their shape, colour, size or length.
While other materials can be used to make dental veneers, porcelain is the most desirable as it has been proven to have great durability and a strong seal. Porcelain is also stain-resistant and reflects light similarly to how natural teeth do provide an incredibly natural appearance.
What to expect when getting porcelain veneers?
The main concern most people have about porcelain veneers is that they believe their teeth will need a major reduction for the veneers to fit over them. However, most porcelain veneers are less than 0.5 mm in thickness. This means, in the majority of cases, we will not shave your teeth down to pegs. There are even “no-prep” veneers that do not require any tooth reduction.
Porcelain veneers last for 15 to 20 years on average, but the life span of your veneers will depend on how you care for them and other environmental factors. Once you’ve been fitted with porcelain veneers, you will need to maintain proper oral hygiene at home and ensure you come in for regular cleanings at least twice a year. The way your jaw and teeth align can also affect your veneers. If your teeth were worn down or fractured because of your bite prior to your makeover, you may also be able to damage your veneers. To prevent this, we might consider wearing a nightguard to stop you from putting too much pressure on the veneers to distribute the forces of your bite.
