No one wants to hear that they will lose a tooth or two, but there are cases in which tooth extractions are the only remedy for dental issues.
You may require dental extraction if:
- You are getting braces and need room to realign or reposition your teeth.
- You were born with extra teeth that are causing your other teeth to be misaligned.
- You have wisdom teeth that are causing problems.
- A tooth with a cavity is severely infected and cannot be properly restored with a root canal.
- A tooth is broken or otherwise damaged beyond repair.
- You have one or more baby teeth that are preventing your adult teeth from emerging.
Before your extraction is done, the dentist will examine your teeth to determine if there are issues that may cause problems during the extraction process. Based on the tooth to be removed, a simple extraction may be done, or a surgical extraction may be required.
During a simple extraction, the dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area before loosening the tooth and then prying it from the gum with special equipment. If you require surgical extraction, local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia will be used for the procedure. The dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue to remove the tooth. Some surgical extractions require that the dentist cut the tooth into pieces or remove bone to access the tooth. Following extraction, medication may be prescribed to help with pain and discomfort.
