Dental inlays and onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry procedures used to restore the functionality and appearance of a damaged or decayed tooth. Inlays and outlays are an example of indirect dental restorations. Indirect restorations are fabricated in the dental lab to fit the specific shape and size of the cavity and then bonded to the tooth.

What is the difference between inlays and onlays

Inlays fit in the grooves within the cusps of the teeth. They don’t extend over the cusps. Dentists use them when the damage to the tooth is minimal. Inlays can also be bonded to the tooth to replace unsightly and defective fillings.

Inlays are often made from tooth-coloured materials such as porcelain and composite resin. Depending on the size and depth of the cavity, inlays can also be made from gold.

Onlays are more extensive than inlays and are made to fit within the grooves and extend onto the chewing surface to replace one or more cusps. An onlay is used when the damage to a tooth is extensive. Onlays were traditionally made of gold, but like inlays, in recent years, more and more are requesting tooth-coloured onlays made from composite resin and porcelain.

Depending on the extent of your cavity, your dentist will help you decide which treatment is appropriate.

What are the benefits of dental inlays and onlays?

The following are the benefits of getting inlays and onlays.

  • Compared to traditional dental fillings, inlays and onlays are more resistant to damage and fractures
  • Porcelain inlays and onlays are stain-resistant
  • Depending on the extent of the cavity and the fracture risk, inlays and onlays can last up to 30 years
  • They are custom made to fit your tooth structure and shape
  • They can improve the natural appearance of teeth
