Dental crowns and bridges are two popular types of restorative dentistry.
A dental crown is a cap used to support a badly decayed tooth, restore a tooth after a root canal, hold a severely cracked or broken tooth in place, or protect a worn tooth. A crown can also serve a cosmetic purpose to improve a tooth’s appearance. Dental crowns are used as well to anchor dental bridges or as part of dental implants.
Dental crowns are made from several materials; however, porcelain crowns are the most popular.
In the past, one would require multiple visits to complete dental crown restoration. On the first visit, the dentist would shave the tooth in preparation for the crown. The dentist would then take an impression of the tooth, which would be sent to a dental lab for a permanent crown to be made. The patient would receive a temporary crown while waiting for the permanent crown. During a follow-up visit, the dentist would cement the permanent crown in place.
Now, you can benefit from same-day crown treatments. For same-day crown treatment, your dentist will measure your teeth with a digital scanner to create a custom-made crown in the office.
Once properly cared for, dental crowns can last for 10 years or longer.
Dental bridges are used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. A bridge comprises an artificial tooth or teeth between two or more crowns that sit on the natural teeth on each side of a gap. For your dentist to fix a bridge in place, existing teeth must be shaved down for the crowns to be cemented on top.
If you practice proper oral hygiene, dental bridges can last for about 10 years.
