A healthy smile can improve your confidence and positively impact your health. One way to improve your smile is through the use of dentures. Dentures are oral prosthetic devices that replace missing teeth.
Types of dentures
Dentures fall into two categoriesꓼ full or partial. Both types of dentures are made in a lab using synthetic material and a mould of your mouth.
Full or complete dentures are designed to replace all your natural teeth. They can either be conventional or intermediate. Conventional dentures require all the natural teeth to be removed and gums fully healed before being fitted. Healing can take several weeks. Intermediate dentures help to prevent you from being toothless during the lengthy healing process.
If all your natural teeth do not need to be removed, partial dentures would be recommended. Partial dentures fill in missing teeth and prevent other teeth from shifting. Partial dentures can be removable or fixed depending on the condition of your mouth as well as your preference.
The process of getting dentures
Before getting your dentures, your dentist will examine your mouth and discuss your options. The dentist will then make a mold of your mouth. The mold will help to ensure that your dentures fit your mouth properly. After a mold has been made, the dentures are then fabricated in a lab. Once completed, you will be fitted with your new teeth. If your dentures do not fit properly, your dentist will make adjustments.
Care and maintenance
Dentures can accumulate plaque and calculus just like your natural teeth, so you must care for them properly. Poor care and maintenance can lead to gum disease.
You can clean dentures by soaking them in a denture cleanser. But if your dentures have clasps, you should only soak them in water. Brush dentures daily with a non-abrasive cleaner and soft-bristled brush and remove them every night before bed. Also, use a soft brush to clean gums and any remaining natural teeth.
