The Most Common Procedures Used in Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry Most Common Procedures | Peak Dental Arts

Do you ever meet people and wonder why their smiles look so big and bright? The truth is, most people aren’t born with perfect teeth.
Cosmetic dentistry procedures can dramatically enhance the appearance and self-esteem of a person by improving the shape and the whiteness of their teeth and as a result, their smile. Over the years, cosmetic teeth procedures have gotten increasingly popular.

At Peak Dental Arts, we’ll begin with a consultation to examine your mouth and teeth. Our North Vancouver cosmetic dentists will determine which procedure will provide you with the best look possible.

1. Teeth whitening

Whitening is one of the most common cosmetic teeth procedures. Dark-coloured foods and beverages can easily stain teeth, along with prolonged cigarette smoking. While there are inexpensive teeth whitening products on the market, they may not have long-term results, so visiting a cosmetic dentist may help you get rid of those hard-to-remove stains.

Cosmetic dentists will use a whitening gel or other bleaching agent and will know how many visits are needed for long-lasting results. You should expect routine touch-ups, but this procedure is less invasive than something like bonding.

2. Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are common for people with cracked, chipped, or discoloured teeth, or for those with significant gaps between their teeth. For this cosmetic dental procedure, dentists will start by measuring your teeth, similar to when you get braces. Based on the shape of your teeth, we will create porcelain veneers, which are thin shells that are perfectly fit and placed over your teeth. The result is a dramatic improvement in the appearance of your teeth and smile.

3. Porcelain Crowns

Made of acrylic or (most commonly) porcelain, crowns are popular for those with oddly shaped or chipped teeth or bad decay. Crowns are caps that fit onto individual teeth and then are fused to metal.

Porcelain crowns have grown in popularity because of actors and other celebrities who don’t want their teeth flaws noticeably visible.

4. Reshaping

Providing some of the most effective results, tooth reshaping—also known as odontoblasts—is a common cosmetic dental procedure. Quickly performed on poorly shaped teeth with no pain involved, in reshaping, a laser or electric drill is used to file the length, shape, or surface of the tooth enamel and reshape it. A sandpaper-like strip may also shape the sides of the tooth, and the procedure finishes with a polish.

5. Bonding

Performed for those with gaps between teeth, chipped or broken teeth, and discolourations, bonding is a cosmetic teeth procedure that involves etching a tooth-coloured resin to the affected teeth. The composite coats the teeth, which is sculpted to cover stains and blend naturally with nearby teeth. Small or worn teeth may also be reshaped during the process. Finally, the material is hardened using a special light. The result is a dramatic improvement in appearance.
