Endodontic Treatment in North Vancouver, BC
If you have a severely damaged tooth, your dentist may refer you to a specialist known as an endodontist.
An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in saving natural teeth and maintaining smiles. Endodontists have advanced dental training, which they use to diagnose and treat issues related to the inner tooth.
Types of endodontic treatment
The following are a few of the dental procedures endodontists perform:
Root canal procedures
A tooth’s pulp can sometimes get infected due to deep tooth decay, a crack, chip, fracture, dental trauma, or repeated dental procedures. The inflammation of the tooth pulp may result in throbbing tooth pain, heightened tooth sensitivity, discoloration of the tooth, swelling of the gums, and tenderness.
When a pulp infection occurs, a root canal procedure may be required.
During root canal treatment, your endodontist will put you under local anesthesia, carefully remove the infected tooth pulp, clean and disinfect the root canal, and enlarge and shape, then seal the root canal.
Endodontic surgery
When a non-surgical root canal treatment alone cannot save a damaged tooth, your endodontist may recommend surgery.
During the surgery, the endodontist can identify and treat issues that were not evident in the initial exam. Endodontic surgery can also be performed to deal with calcium deposits in the canal and treat damage to the root surface or the surrounding bone.
Treatment for traumatic dental injuries
If you have had an accident that resulted in a cracked, chipped or loose tooth, consider seeing an endodontist. Endodontists specialize in treating traumatic dental injuries and can restore damaged teeth.
Dental implants
Although an endodontist’s primary aim is to preserve natural teeth, sometimes a tooth is damaged beyond repair. In such a case, your endodontist may recommend extracting the tooth and replacing it with a dental implant.
